A PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

Kominsky is alone within the confines of his damp cell. His face is throbbing and covered in knuckle-shaped swellings. His consciousness pervades the cell's darkness. The sturdy bars will never yield to the forces of his mind. He will not even try. He needs to conserve his strength.

He settles down into as comfortable a position as he can muster on his hard seat. He concentrates. His mind fills, then overflows. Like soft waves lapping at the shore at rising tide, his consciousness edges outwards beyond the confines of his cell, passing through the forlorn thoughts of dozens of prisoners held within the castle dungeons. Further still and his thoughts ascend like vapours, filling invisible voids, passing from soul to soul, searching, spreading, sensing. That familiar warmth. Unmistakable. It can be no one else. Gently, softly, he calls her name. Her mind is opening. She is so frightened. There is no other way.

"Marianna, Marianna. Don't be afraid." He feels her scream. "Marianna, it's me, Dominik." He can sense her mind closing. "Please, Marianna, don't shut me out. Open yourself to me."

"Dominik? What's going on?"

"Oh, Marianna, I didn't know if you were still alive." He feels his heart overflow with relief.

"I don't understand. You're here with me - and I can even see you although I know you're not really here. So, this is your power…you're all bruised! Oh, Dominik, they've tortured you!"

He can sense her rising distress. "My beautiful Marianna, I'm so sorry it has come to this. I'm so sorry I never told you the truth about myself."

"Please don't say this. To me, you are Dominik Kominsky, the love of my life and the father of my child - that will always be the case, and nothing will ever change that. I can feel you so close to me."

Now immersed within her feelings of overwhelming sadness, he struggles to keep his mind strong, "They have taken you to a dangerous place. Please tell me where you are." He senses her mind close a little.

"I am at the Terezín concentration camp."

"What's happening? How are they treating you? Have they hurt you?"

"They haven't, Dominik. I'm okay. I'm fine."

Kominsky feels her resist him. "Tell me, Marianna. I know that's not true." Despite her resistance, he can visualise her through her thoughts. Her clothes are the same ones she wore when he last set eyes on her but they are now dark with dirt. He feels her swelling tummy is now uncomfortable in her dress. There are two heartbeats, one faster than the other. He sees prisoners cramped together in the grounds. "Oh, Marianna, they're making you sleep on the floor! He sees how she rarely has a blanket to cover her. He sees the pans of offensive hot liquid she passes round to the frail and elderly prisoners and is repulsed when he realises it's their food. "You clean lice from children's' hair!"

"It can't be avoided here."

He feels her open her mind to him. She has so little strength to fight.
